Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of therapy that was developed in the 1980's to help war veterans deal with symptoms related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and it has been found to be just as helpful in treating any stress and trauma related symptoms such as flashbacks, panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, phobias, depression, over-reactive anger, worrying, and disturbed sleep.
Through the use of bilateral stimulation - through eye movements, beeping sounds, or holding hand buzzers, a person is guided to think about a disturbing thought or past event while simultaneously experiencing the benign stimulation. The effect is helping a person to process the thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations associated with the disturbing thought or past event to help lessen the emotional charge.
